or Learning from Plovdiv

Learning from Plovdiv refers to the book Learning from Las Vegas (1972), a case-study considered to be one of the milestones of post-modernism in architecture. The methodology of the project produces a visual analysis of the interrelations between architectural and urbanistic strata of Plovdiv (once Philippopolis in Thrace), a city located in the post-Soviet space, from Antiquity to the shopping malls of the 21st century. Synthesising curatorial, theoretical, artistic and photographic abilities, it results in a large series of images, an architectural and socio-economic ‘photographic mission’, at the crossroads of documentary artefact and programmatic artwork.
Produced in the framework of the ContextAiR residency programme, the series documents hundreds of architectural sites in various districts of Plovdiv (residential, public and commercial buildings, squares, archaeological excavations, etc.) The photographic study has the ambition to arouse public interest in the processes that have influenced the architectural landscape of the city, to show and bring to debate different perspectives on the city’s past, present and future, and thus contribute to the critical perception and analysis of urban space.
The full extent of the series is several hundreds of images, sourced from 1300 film negatives. This selection is for preview purposes only, its contents, captions and sequential order are not finalised.

Learning from Plovdiv fait référence au livre Learning from Las Vegas (1972), une étude de cas considérée comme un des jalons du post-modernisme en architecture. La méthodologie du projet génère une analyse visuelle de l’interconnexion des strates architecturales et urbanistiques de Plovdiv (anc. Philippopolis en Thrace), une ville située dans l’espace post-soviétique, depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’aux centres commerciaux du XXIe siècle. Synthétisant des compétences curatoriales, théoriques, artistiques et photographiques, il aboutit à une large série d’images, une « mission photographique » architecturale et socio-économique, à la croisée de l’artefact documentaire et de l’œuvre d’art programmatique.
Réalisée dans le cadre du programme de résidence ContextAiR, la série documente des centaines de sites architecturaux dans différents quartiers de Plovdiv (bâtiments résidentiels, publics et commerciaux, places publiques, fouilles archéologiques, etc.) L'étude photographique vise à susciter un intérêt public pour les processus qui influencent le paysage architectural de la ville, de montrer et de mettre en débat différentes perspectives sur le passé, présent et futur de la ville, et ainsi contribuer à la perception et l’analyse critiques de l’espace urbain.
La série pleinement déployée compte plusieurs centaines d'images, issues de 1300 négatifs argentiques. Cette sélection est un aperçu du projet, ses contenus, légendes et ordre séquentiel ne sont pas finalisés.
